Michigan hospital blazes trail in fight against fungal meningitis

CHICAGO (Reuters) - After his first day working at St Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor hospital's newly created Fungal Outbreak Clinic, Dr David Vandenberg struggled to describe to his boss the enormity of what lay ahead. He settled on a line from the movie Jaws.

"We're going to need a bigger boat," Vandenberg told Dr Lakshmi Halasyamani, chief medical officer of the Michigan hospital, echoing the film's local police chief after he first eyes a 25-foot (7.5-metre) killer shark.

The St Joseph Mercy clinic has been at the front line of the fight against one of the biggest ever U.S. outbreaks of fungal meningitis, a killer infection that has been traced to tainted steroid shots from a Massachusetts pharmacy.

So far, 620 Americans have developed serious infections related to the outbreak, including 367 cases of deadly meningitis, and 39 people have died. Of the 19 U.S. states affected, Michigan has been worst hit, handling more than one third of the total cases in the outbreak.

St Joseph Mercy - a 537-bed Catholic hospital located in Ypsilanti, on the doorstep of the University of Michigan - has treated 169 of the state's 223 cases of infections that can cause meningitis, including 7 people who died.

At one point it was so overrun that 87 of its 537 beds, which are usually occupied by patients with cancer or heart ailments and the like, were occupied by patients with fungal meningitis and related infections.

Dr Tom Chiller, the fungal disease expert at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who has been overseeing the outbreak, praised the work of the hospital in helping to limit deaths from the outbreak.

"They have been incredibly creative in dealing with these complicated patients," he said.

In all, almost 14,000 people seeking relief from back and joint pain received injections from moldy steroid shots made at the now-bankrupt New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts before they were recalled in late September.

CDC experts initially feared death rates in the 40 to 50 percent range; instead, only about 6 percent of those infected have died, and the CDC credits the creative and dogged efforts of state and local health officials for keeping the death rates so low.

The first wave of the outbreak involved the most severe cases of meningitis - an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. But starting in mid-October, patients who had been recovering from meningitis were developing potentially fatal localized infections near the site where contaminated drug was injected to treat back or neck pain.

As they started seeing more cases of these local, secondary infections, the staff at St Joseph's devised a bold plan to screen all patients in their database looking for potential new infections that might have been missed in the first wave.

On December 20, the CDC issued an alert to doctors incorporating some of lessons learned by the efforts of doctors at St Joseph's and other hospitals, calling for increased screening of patients who may be harboring localized infections.

A BEWILDERING FUNGI

Among the patients who developed secondary infections was Bonita Robbins, a 72-year-old retired nurse from Pinckney, Michigan, who received doses of the tainted drug at the Michigan Pain Specialists clinic in the nearby town of Brighton while seeking relief for lower-back pain.

The first shot brought some relief, the second did little to ease her aches, and the third was contaminated. In October, Robbins went to St Joseph's with a severe headache, back pain and pain in her thighs.

She spent 37 days in the hospital taking two kinds of antifungal drugs.

Dr Anurag Malani, an infectious disease specialist treating Robbins, said the challenge with the outbreak was that there was no medical literature to fall back on.

"No one has ever seen anything of this magnitude related to fungal infections, ever," he said.

Chiller said U.S. doctors had never treated meningitis caused by Exserohilum rostratum, the environmental mold causing most of the infections.

"It's just a rare, rare cause of infection." Seeing that mold in the meninges - membranes covering the brain and spinal cord - is "completely new."

Initially, St Joseph's Fungal Outbreak Clinic was started in order to coordinate the care of patients after their discharge, which included overseeing the administration of a complex regime of anti-fungal drugs.

It morphed into something bigger when some of its 53 patients with meningitis started returning with infections near the site in their back or neck where the contaminated drug was injected.

Then came a wave of patients like Robbins, who had been ruled out for meningitis with a spinal tap, but were still complaining of pain near their injection site.

GETTING THE 'BIGGER BOAT'

"When it became obvious that the number of patients would be a much higher percentage than anticipated by the CDC, we expanded our clinic and started enlisting the help of several other hospitals," Vandenberg said.

Many of the patients had spinal abscesses, an infection in the space between the outside covering of the spinal cord and the bones of the spine. Others developed arachnoiditis, an infection of nerves within the spinal canal.

The decision to screen all patients in the hospital database who might have received tainted injections was not taken at the recommendation of the CDC.

"That was our own decision," said Vandenberg, a specialist in internal medicine overseeing the screening effort.

He admitted that the strategy was aggressive, but said that, especially early on, doctors feared the local infections might be precursors to meningitis, making catching them early a potentially life-saving move.

Excluding patients who had already been screened and those who had injections in areas other than the spine, the hospital targeted about 500 patients for MRI scans.

Most so far have had private insurance that covers the screening. For the uninsured, the hospital's Patient Financial Services department has been helping them to apply for financial support.

"We did over 400 MRIs in about a 4-week period," Vandenberg said. The hospital screened so many patients, in fact, that the state of Michigan sent in an emergency mobile MRI unit to help.

Vandenberg got the task of reading stacks of MRI reports, sometimes as many as 30 a day.

So far, about 20 percent of the MRIs have shown up as abnormal, meaning that patients have to come back for surgery and treatment.

Vandenberg makes all of those calls personally. Not all of them go smoothly. He likens the gravity of the conversation - learning you have a potentially deadly new disease that requires months of treatment with risky drugs - to telling someone they have cancer.

After one especially tough call, in which a heart patient feared he would not survive the surgery he would need to clear his infection, Vandenberg cracked.

"I started crying. I probably haven't cried for 15 years."

SIGNS OUTBREAK IS EASING

But at last, after months of onslaught, there are signs the outbreak is easing.

Attendance at the hospital's daily support group has begun to taper off. And since the beginning of December, more than 50 patients with fungal infections have been discharged, while only 20 have been admitted, bringing the total number of fungus-related inpatient to 30.

Vandenberg nevertheless cautions that the outbreak is still far from over.

"Every single day of this screening program, we're finding one or two cases that are abnormal and need to be admitted," he said.

Vandenberg gave the CDC access to the clinic's database so the agency could see how the effort turned out, and this month, the CDC issued the alert to doctors incorporating some of the results of the MRI screening program.

The alert warned that some patients who got tainted injections but did not develop meningitis may still be at risk of localized infections.

And it urged doctors to consider ordering an MRI for all patients who still have pain, even if the pain is similar to what sent them in for treatment in the first place.

Chiller said the United States had not yet reached the end of the outbreak.

"Unfortunately, with fungi, the incubation periods are so long and they can remain indolent. I'm definitely concerned that we're going to continue to see more cases."

Remains of Conn. gunman claimed for burial

(AP) ? The body of the man who killed 26 people at a Connecticut elementary school has been claimed for burial.

Connecticut Medical Examiner Wayne H. Carver II tells the Hartford Courant (http://cour.at/TrQFyH) that the remains of Adam Lanza were claimed several days ago by someone who wanted to remain anonymous.

A spokeswoman at Carver's office told The Associated Press she could not release details about the status of Lanza's remains.

The 20-year-old Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. He also killed his mother in their Newtown home before going on the rampage and then committing suicide.

A private funeral was held earlier this month in New Hampshire for his mother, Nancy Lanza.

Police have not offered a motive for the killings.

Nobel scientist Levi-Montalcini dies in Rome, 103

Rome's mayor says biologist Rita Levi-Montalcini, who conducted underground research in defiance of Fascist persecution, and went on to win a Nobel Prize for helping unlock the mysteries of the cell, has died at her home in the city. She was 103.

Italy's so-called "Lady of the Cells," who died on Sunday, lived through anti-Semitic discrimination and Nazi invasion, becoming one of her country's leading scientists and sharing the medicine prize for her groundbreaking research in the United States.

Her research increased the understanding of many conditions, including tumors, developmental malformations, and senile dementia.

Analysis: For tech investors, it's hard to know when to bolt

(Reuters) - When Hewlett-Packard Co agreed to buy British software company Autonomy in August last year for $11.1 billion, two well-known investors made diametrically different bets on how the big deal would play out.

To short seller Jim Chanos, who had been raising red flags on Autonomy for years and had started shorting shares of HP in 2011, the deal was another nail in the coffin of the Silicon Valley tech giant, according to a source familiar with his thinking.

But to activist investor Ralph Whitworth, co-founder of Relational Investors LLC, it was time to commit to HP and the turnaround story the company was trying to sell to Wall Street. His fund bought more than 17.5 million HP shares after the deal was announced, and Whitworth received a seat on the company's board. This year, Relational roughly doubled its stake in HP.

In the wake of HP's decision to take an $8.8 billion write-down on the deal because of alleged accounting irregularities at Autonomy, it appears Chanos - whose call to short Enron before the energy company collapsed in a corporate scandal may be his most famous trade - was more astute.

HP's shares are down 36 percent since Relational, which declined to comment, built its stake in the third quarter of 2011.

BARRIERS TO ENTRY

Relational's big move into HP is a reminder that even smart investors can get things wrong in the fast-evolving technology sector, where once hot global names like Research in Motion and Yahoo can quickly become yesterday's news.

It is a world where a company may effectively erect barriers to entry in a market only to have them torn down by a rival with a new whizz-bang product - just as Apple's iPhone broke the dominance that Research in Motion's BlackBerry had enjoyed.

One warning sign that a tech company may be on the verge of losing its edge is when it makes acquisitions outside of its main area of expertise to move into new product lines. Savvy tech investors also say be wary of companies that experience a succession of management changes, or when a successful core business starts looking tired.

The pace of change in the technology sector is much faster than in other industries, said Kaushik Roy, an analyst at Hercules Technology Growth Capital. "It attracts new talent and capital, many startups are formed, which can be extremely disruptive to incumbents," Roy said. "In other words, yesterday's winners can rapidly become today's losers and vice versa."

In the case of HP, the company not only has had four CEOs since 1999, it has been striving to find another niche to dominate as demand for one of its core products - computer printers - wanes and as its PC business stumbles.

Or consider online search pioneer Yahoo, which has gone through six chief executives and is struggling to keep pace with Google.

Josh Spencer, a portfolio manager at T. Rowe Price, said frequent turnover in the executive suite at Yahoo was a warning sign to him. Spencer said he does not own Yahoo shares and has not in the recent past.

RED FLAGS

While a company may view an acquisition as a fresh start - that is what HP was trying to say about Autonomy - some investors see it as a warning the core business is struggling.

Spencer noted that the technology industry's most successful companies - Apple and Samsung - generally have not made acquisitions and instead developed new products internally.

For Margaret Patel, managing director at Wells Capital Management, one of the first red flags she saw at HP was when former CEO Carly Fiorina bought Compaq for roughly $25 billion in 2002.

"I felt then that the acquisition was too large and expensive, and personal computers were not their core strength," said Patel, who has since avoided investing in HP.

Of course, timing can be everything even if an investor is eventually proven right. Patel missed out on a 137 percent gain in HP's stock price from the time of the Compaq deal up until the end of 2010.

PREMIUM VALUATIONS

A few money managers see a flashing yellow light in the big sell-off of Apple shares in the past few months.

Apple, the most valuable U.S. company, has shed nearly 30 percent of its value in the last three months.

Since the death of co-founder Steve Jobs - the driving force behind Apple's iPod, iPhone and iPad - DoubleLine co-founder Jeffrey Gundlach has been recommending that investors short the company's shares because "the product innovator isn't there anymore."

Gundlach said he began shorting Apple's stock at around $610 and maintains that it could drop to $425. He declined to comment on Tim Cook, who succeeded Jobs over a year ago and is seen by many as less visionary and innovative than Jobs.

Christian Bertelsen, chief investment officer at Global Financial Private Capital, with assets under management of $1.7 billion, said his firm began paring back its exposure to Apple this fall because he felt the expectations for the company's new iPhone5 had gotten overheated.

He said his firm dramatically took down its exposure to Apple shares when the stock hit $670 a share. "For us, the light bulb went off this fall," he said. Mind you, Apple's shares still remain up about 25 percent for the whole year.

And then there's Research in Motion. Once a leader in smartphones, it's now in danger of becoming irrelevant.

"They saw the move towards all touch-screen phones and didn't move with it," said Stuart Jeffrey, an analyst at Nomura Securities who noted how the BlackBerry 10 touch-screen phone will debut on January 30, 2013, six years after Apple released its first iPhone in 2007.

Robert Stimpson, a portfolio manager at Oak Associates Funds whose fund does not own any shares of Research in Motion, said the company's BlackBerry phones are on a downward slope and it will be tough for the company to regain its lost luster.

"The end of the road is a long, lonely journey," Stimpson said of Research in Motion. "I think they will fight the good fight for many years, probably unsuccessfully."

Yen falls, Nikkei surges as Japan gets a new government

TOKYO (Reuters) - The yen fell to a 20-month low against the dollar on Wednesday, buoying the benchmark Nikkei stock average to nine-month highs, as Japan swore in a new prime minister eager to pursue drastic stimulus steps to drive the country's economy out of deflation.

Asian shares and other assets were capped in thin holiday trade, with investors focusing on the fate of U.S. negotiations to avert a budget crunch looming at the end of the year.

Markets in Singapore <.ftsti>, Malaysia <.klse>, Indonesia <.jkse>, the Philippines <.psi> and South Korea <.ks11> reopened on Wednesday after closing on Tuesday for the Christmas holiday.

Hong Kong and Australia remain closed on Wednesday. Europe also will not trade, but U.S. markets reopen later in the day.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> was little changed. Shanghai shares <.ssec> were flat, but stayed in positive territory on the year after a 2.5 percent jump on Tuesday erased 2012 losses. It is set for a first annual gain in three years. South Korean shares <.ks11> ended nearly flat.

Shinzo Abe, whose party won a landslide victory in an election earlier this month, was elected Japan's premier on Wednesday. Abe, who is expected to appoint his cabinet later Wednesday, is calling for a mix of aggressive monetary policy easing and big fiscal spending to beat deflation and rein in the strong yen.

He has kept up pressure on the Bank of Japan to be more drastic and adopt a 2 percent inflation target to beat deep-rooted deflation, pushing the yen to a 20-month low of 85.38 yen on trading platform EBS on Wednesday. Traders eyed the dollar's 2011 high of 85.53 yen as the next target.

The euro rose as high as 112.55 yen on EBS, just below its 16-month high of 112.59 yen hit on December 19.

The weaker yen has bolstered hopes for better earnings from Japanese companies and underpinned the Nikkei, which has gained some 18 percent since mid-November when the election was scheduled, fuelling expectations for Abe's party to win. The yen has lost nearly 8 percent against the dollar in the same period.

The Nikkei <.n225> closed at a nine-month high with a 1.5 percent gain. <.t/>

"Most foreign funds have added Japanese shares and there are fewer participants today, but there still is a reason for the Nikkei to rise," said Hideyuki Okoshi, general manager at Chibagin Securities. "Not only exporters but investors are buying other stocks which could benefit under the new government."

Japanese government debt prices fell, with the 10-year bond futures hitting a three-month low of 143.65 in active trade. Ten-year JGB yields rose 1.5 basis points to 0.780 percent, matching a six-week high hit on December 19.

"We continue to see equities going high, so the pressure is on the long end of the JGB curve. For the short end of the curve, we continue to see the BOJ ease aggressively, so there is no change in that," said Tadashi Matsukawa, head of Japan fixed income at PineBridge Investments.

Minutes of the BOJ's policy-setting meeting in November, released on Wednesday, showed that some board members said the central bank must act decisively, without ruling out any policy options, if the outlook for the economy and prices worsens further.

"FISCAL CLIFF" RISK

The dollar was expected to stay firm this week as the U.S. fiscal impasse is likely to continue to sap investor appetite for risky assets and raise the dollar's safe-haven appeal.

Ten-year U.S. Treasury notes held steady in price to yield roughly 1.776 percent in Asia, little changed from late U.S. trade on Monday. The U.S. bond market was closed on Tuesday for Christmas.

"I think there is about a 50 percent chance of the cliff being avoided at the year-end through an agreement of some kind, even if it turns out to be just a short-term postponement," said Tomoaki Shishido, a rate analyst for Nomura Securities in Tokyo.

A U.S. official said on Tuesday that President Barack Obama may return to Washington from his Hawaiian holiday as early as Wednesday evening to address the unfinished negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" of some $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to start on January 1.

If the United States falls off the fiscal cliff, economists warn that the world's largest economy could plunge into recession and drag global economies down as well.

Data out of Asia on Wednesday underscored fragile global growth.

Exports in Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, rose nearly 27 percent in November from a year ago, but that reflected recovery from flooding in late 2011 and not growth in global demand.

South Korea's key consumer sentiment index held steady in December from November and stood below the neutral point for a fifth consecutive month, diminishing hopes of a quick economic rebound.

Gold edged lower on Wednesday on uncertainty over the fiscal cliff, but a weaker yen sparked a rally in bullion futures on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM).

Brent crude climbed above $109 per barrel on Wednesday in thin trade, with investors hoping for a last-minute deal to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis. U.S. crude futures also inched up 0.4 percent to $88.94.

Pope expresses hope, calls for peace | MyFOX8.com ? Greensboro ...

Pope Benedict XVI (AP photo)

Pope Benedict XVI (AP photo)

(CNN) ? On Christmas, Pope Benedict XVI spread a hopeful message to his followers, calling for peace in many of the world?s hot spots.

From Syria to northern Nigeria, the leader of the Catholic Church urged dialogue and the protection of civilians.

?In this world, there is a good soil God has prepared,? the pope said. ?Consequently, there is hope in the world; a hope in which we can trust, even at the most difficult times and in the most difficult situations.?

Benedict spoke to a crowd of about 50,000 gathered at St. Peter?s Square in Vatican City.

He called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria, where a civil war has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

?May peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims,? Benedict said. ?Once again, I appeal for an end to the bloodshed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict.?

Benedict also asked for dialogue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

?May peace spring up in the land where the redeemer was born, and may he grant Israelis and Palestinians courage to end long years of conflict and division and embark resolutely on the path of negotiation,? he said.

Regarding China, where there have been tensions this year between the Catholic Church and Chinese authorities over the oversight of church leaders there, Benedict called for expanded freedom of religion.

Addressing China?s new leaders, he expressed hope that, ?in fulfilling this task, they will esteem the contribution of the religions, in respect for each, in such a way that they can help to build a fraternal society for the benefit of that noble people and of the whole world.?

Benedict also expressed concern about violence in Mali and Nigeria, ?where savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians.?

And he expressed hope that the citizens of Egypt will ?build societies founded on justice and respect for the freedom and dignity of every person.?

The pontiff added, before delivering Christmas blessings in 65 languages: ?May every land become a good earth which receives and brings forth kindness and truth, justice and peace. Happy Christmas to all of you.?..

Firm in fungal outbreak files for bankruptcy

By JoNel Aleccia, NBC News

The compounding pharmacy blamed for 620 infections and 39 deaths in an outbreak of fungal meningitis and other infections caused by contaminated drugs filed for bankruptcy Friday, and pledged to establish a fund to compensate victims.?

The New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., faces more than 400 lawsuits from patients who received epidural steroid injections later found to be tainted with fungus linked to serious and lethal infections, records showed.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Massachusetts district bankruptcy court.?

In a statement issued late Friday, the company said the goal of the bankruptcy is to provide a "greater, quicker, fairer payout" to creditors than could be achieved through "piecemeal" litigation.?

NECC also announced the appointment of Keith D. Lowey as the firm's independent director and chief restructuring officer. He will supervise the restructuring and be responsible for establishing NECC's effort to create a compensation fund. NECC's bankruptcy counsel, Daniel Cohn, said that claimants and their lawyers will be "actively involved" in the compensation process, according to the statement.?

"Many families across the U.S. have been impacted by this great tragedy, and it is difficult to comprehend the sense of loss so many people have experienced," Lowey said in a statement. "Everyone associated with the New England Compounding Center shares that sense of loss."

Elizabeth A. Kaveny, a lawyer who represents five clients, all in Michigan, who said they were sickened by contaminated shots, says the company's action is no guarantee of justice for the alleged victims.

"NECC gets no bonus points for establishing a 'victims' compensation fund' after victimizing hundreds of patients in our country," she said in a statement to NBC News. "It is an obvious and necessary step of a bankruptcy proceeding and all victims need to be compensated. While NECC clearly should declare bankruptcy and never be permitted to reopen its doors, we have significant questions as to why this is a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, what funds are available for NECC's victims and how the victims' claims will be evaluated."

Problems with three lots of NECC steroids injected into?some 14,000 people in 23 states were first detected in September. The company was shuttered in October after federal inspectors found widespread evidence of contamination throughout the pharmacy, some dating back to January.?

The firm was licensed as a compounding pharmacy and was supposed to be mixing medications to order on prescription-by-prescription basis. However, investigations have shown the firm worked on a much larger scale and evaded several run-ins with the Food and Drug Administration and state regulators over the size of its operation and previous cases of contamination.?

The illnesses and deaths -- which include not only fungal meningitis, but strokes, joint infections and spinal infections -- have prompted new demands to overhaul the way that compounding pharmacies are regulated in the U.S.?

Real Estate Advertising Site isMLS.com Changes Its Name

Citing possible public confusion, real estate advertising site isMLS.com became Listingism.com and has completed its search engine updating and website redesign.

North Port, FL. (PRWEB) December 21, 2012

Six months after launching the latest addition in the hot real estate advertising market, isMLS.com, concerned by possible confusion in the url, has changed their name to Listingism.com.

"It was something that needed to be done. When we created the website with letters synonymous with real estate, MLS," states Kent Wolfe, REALTOR? and manager, "we thought it would make it easy for consumers to know immediately what it?s about, but a few members have asked if we were a part of a Multiple Listing Service, which we're not."

In the fiercely competitive advertising market, their growth has been steady but not stellar. With just over two-hundred members in the six months following the launch, they struggle getting agents and brokers to join. ?Our e-mail campaign hasn?t resulted in as many new members as we would have liked,? adds Kent, ?We were hoping for two-percent but it?s been far lower and we?re trying other things as well. It may have been in part the name that made people leery.?

Generating operating revenue from business advertisers and sponsors, Listingism.com offers all services for free to licensed agents and brokers including virtual tour and video embed features. Kent explains, ?It seems everyone has their hands in an agent?s pocket; Listingism.com was created as a truly free service for all licensed members.?

Listingism.com isn?t flooded with advertising requests and as of yet hasn?t found a large sponsor to help foot the bill, most of the cost is paid out-of-pocket by Kent and his wife Beccy Wolfe, the general manager. ?It?s tough, but we aren?t giving up,? says Beccy. ?I firmly believe it?s a great product and those who have joined are helping us make the site better with suggestions and ideas, most of which are acted upon. Their input helped us with the name change as well?

Listingism.com has a simple platform; old-fashioned advertising combined with internet speed and is free of pop-up and display ads, but history has proven an upstart advertising business has the odds working against it. Still, there?s something to be said about simplicity.

To learn more about their services or to become a member, visit listingism.com or email them at info(at)listingism(dot)com

Membership and all services are free to licensed real estate agents and brokers across the US and Canada.

?Jack Reacher? a Fun Actioner | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

Jack Reacher

In Lee Child?s best-selling novels, Jack Reacher is 6?5? and 250 pounds, an imposing and intimidating man. Tom Cruise is 5?7?, maybe 150 pounds and isn?t anywhere close to being imposing or intimidating. Yet Cruise plays the popular character in ?Jack Reacher,? based on Child?s ?One Shot,? the ninth book in the Reacher series.

Jack Reacher is a former military police officer. He drifts from town to town, doesn?t have a cell phone, buys his clothes from Goodwill and lives completely off the grid. He comes to Pittsburgh after a sniper kills five people and the prime suspect is a man Reacher once investigated back when he was in the Army. Things don?t seem as open and shut as everyone believes once Reacher and a defense attorney (Rosamund Pike) start looking into things, which draws the ire of a mysterious gangster called The Zec (Werner Herzog) and his right hand man, played by Jai Courtney, who will next be seen as Bruce Willis? son in ?A Good Day to Die Hard.?

Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, who won an Oscar for writing ?The Usual Suspects,? eschews big special effects for old school thrills, proving once again you don?t need a computer to make a movie exciting. The opening scene would make Alfred Hitchcock proud, with an extended shot through the sniper?s scope as he marks all of his targets, one of whom is a woman carrying a small child. As the shot continues, the tension builds until its almost too much to bear. The tragic events in Newtown last week add an extra layer of terror to the sequence. There?s also a car chase midway through the film that doesn?t seem to use any special effects and is outstanding.

Even Reacher himself is old school. He?s like an Old West gunslinger, riding into town. He has zero issues, nothing personal at stake, is always right, is the toughest guy around and immediately leaves once the job is done.

At 130 minutes, ?Reacher? is a touch too long for a vigilante film and really could have used a R-rating to make all of the smack talk in the film classic, but it?s practical action scenes are exciting, and even though Cruise isn?t anything close to the literary version of Jack Reacher, he makes a fine cinematic version.

Christmas the Indian Way - Knowledge Must Blog

Christmas in India ? how does that work? For many people (including me), it was difficult to imagine at first: Christmas trees, snow and presents - accompanied by warm climate, cows and monkeys? I asked friends, colleagues, shopkeepers and people on the street about it. How do they celebrate this festival? Is it as grand and pompous as in Christian countries? I got various answers, but one can be said for certain ? Christmas is enjoyed by everyone!

Even though a majority of Indians are Hindu, Christmas is widely celebrated around the country in some way or another, regardless of caste or creed. The Christmas period starts at least a week before Christmas day, and continues until New Year's day.

It comes without much surprise that Christmas is celebrated most enthusiastically by Christians. Some of my Indian Christian friends even keep fast from 1st of December until Christmas day! In the build up to the festival, houses in the Christian neighbourhoods look amazing. They are decorated with Christmas lights, golden stars and small cribs (mangers) that represent the stable where Jesus Christ was born. Some neighbourhoods even hold special competitions for the best crib decorations. People vote on the most beautifully-decorated ones and award them prizes right after the midnight mass on Christmas Day. Just like Hindus before Diwali, Christians are busy washing, painting, renovating and redecorating their places in the days leading up to Christmas.

?For me, Christmas has a similar feeling as Diwali ? lights everywhere, people prepare for it, they fast and give each other presents,? says Shruti, an entrepreneur from Delhi who is a Hindu.

Many schools organise shows dedicated to Christmas: children dressed as angels perform on stage, sing Christmas carols and, of course, wish each other Merry Christmas. It is interesting that not only students of Christian schools take part in these performances - all kinds of pupils enjoy participating in the celebration. The government-run girl school near our office in South Delhi, for example, is buzzing with activity these days.

Of course, the highlight of the Christmas season is Christmas Mass. After the pompous mass in a beautifully decorated church, families gather at their homes to enjoy the traditional plum cake with raisins and almonds and drink a glass of wine. After that comes the main course, usually a non-vegetarian dish. For all people I asked about Christmas in India, the main difference between Diwali and Christmas is this cake and a non-veg meal. Even Santa Claus was not mentioned very often.

As in other countries, people staying away from home try to come home for Christmas to spend the holiday with their families. However, in contrast to Western celebrations, Christmas in India is more focused on the community than the family. It is the time when Indian Christians take special care of others in need. For example, some families post invitations to their Christmas dinners on noticeboards in the church so that other people can come and share the happiness ? and sometimes even presents ? of the celebration.

?Christmas is the time to buy new clothes for the next year. The best clothes people buy, they wear for the first time for the Christmas Mass,? comments Shammi, a Hindi teacher from Delhi who is a Christian.

As clothes are among the most popular Christmas presents, hectic shopping activity can be observed in the run-up to the festival. Huge malls, small shops and markets are draped in red and white, Christmas trees and socks, Santas, candles and fairy lights. Shops tend to be extremely overcrowded during the celebration season. Gift marketers make the best of this season by boosting the hype through special offers and sales.

In the biggest metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Chennai, Christmas has assumed secular overtones and is enjoyed by everyone as a festival of unity and happiness. Music and decorations can be seen not only on churches and houses of devotees, but on most shops, cafes, and streets. Red Santa hats are omnipresent, they are sold at every big road crossing in Delhi. It is not unusual to see people wearing them on their way to work by metro!

Urban families enjoy going out for food and drinks during the festive season. Christmas-themed all-you-can-eat buffets and family brunches are very popular. Of course, Christmas is a great time for partying. Urban youth meets to go out to enjoy one of the many special events held around the city. All clubs, restaurants and cafes have Christmas-themed evenings during the season.

?Christmas for us is the time to meet your friends, go out, have a few drinks and enjoy some non-veg food! It is the time when we celebrate unity. All young people love Christmas, no matter what their religious believes are,? explains Aru, a shopkeeper from Delhi who is a Hindu.

Getco buying Knight Capital in $1.4B deal

(AP) ? Nearly five months after a major software malfunction at Knight Capital roiled financial markets, the trading firm has agreed to sell itself to a competitor, Getco, in a cash-and-stock deal that the companies value at $1.4 billion.

Knight shareholders can choose $3.75 per share in cash or one share of stock in the new holding company. The per-share price ? which is more than the $3.50 per share that Getco offered last month ? is a 13 percent premium to Knight's Tuesday closing price. But it's a fraction of the company's worth before the meltdown.

Knight's stock rose 24 cents, or 7.2 percent, to $3.57 in premarket trading.

Knight Capital Group Inc. has one of the most advanced platforms for trading brokerages. The Jersey City, N.J., company takes stock trading orders from brokers like TD Ameritrade and E-Trade and routes them to the New York Stock Exchange and other exchanges.

Getco's acquisition is a path forward for Knight, which suffered $461.1 million in losses from the August malfunction that sent the shares of dozens of publicly traded companies haywire.

After the problem was traced back to Knight, its shares lost three-fourths of their value in two days, forcing it to cede control of its operations on the New York Stock Exchange and seek a lifeline.

Getco Holding Co. company became a major stakeholder after pitching in on a $400 million bailout of Knight this summer with a group led by financial firm Jefferies Group. Getco itself owns 57 million shares of Knight.

Under the buyout agreement, Getco will receive 233 million shares of the new holding company. Getco CEO Daniel Coleman will become CEO of the combined company. Knight Chairman and CEO Thomas Joyce will become executive chairman.

The combined company's board will have nine directors, including Coleman and Joyce. Getco will designate 4 additional board members, while Knight will name three additional directors.

Getco, based in Chicago, is owned mainly by its partners and executive team. Its only outside investor is General Atlantic, a private equity firm based in Greenwich, Conn.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2013.

Credit Card Tips That Will Change Your Life | Finance News Today ...

TIP! It can be a good idea to use a credit card when you are purchasing electronics. Many cards offer buyer protection plans on electronics purchases, and these plans can sometimes exceed the included warranty.

It is never a bad idea to take good advice, particularly when bank cards are involved. This article has many suggestions on how to understand and utilize credit cards successfully. More people have bank cards than really know how to use them wisely, and this gets too many in hot financial water.

Credit Card

TIP! Negotiate your interest rate. In many cases, you may be able to successfully negotiate a lower rate with your creditor.

Tuck your credit card behind your debit card in your wallet in order to avoid unintentionally overusing your credit card. This helps because you will know which card you are using if you are in a hurry and/or not being very attentive.

TIP! If you are shopping around for secured cards, stay away from prepaid cards. These are debit cards, not credit cards, so credit bureaus do not receive reports from them.

Beyond knowing the interest rate and APR, it is important to also look into any other hidden fees that you may be charged. The card may come with additional fees and charges that make the card unbearable.

TIP! Keep one credit card open. Try to leave the oldest and healthiest account open.

Never lie about how much money you make just so you can apply for a card with an extremely high limit. The company may actually give you the credit card and not check your information. However, the credit limit may be too high for your income level, saddling you with debt you cannot afford to pay.

Credit Card

TIP! Many people have credit cards, however very few use them correctly. Debt is unavoidable at times, but credit card debt can quickly bury people who do not keep keep a close eye on them.

Check over your agreement, and make sure you understand all the terms before using your credit card. In most cases, using the credit card for the first time means you agree with all the terms. The agreement may have fine print, but it is critical for you to carefully read it.

TIP! If you cannot make your scheduled payments, you can damage your credit rating. When your credit rating is damaged, certain tasks become more difficult, including renting an apartment, getting finance to buy an automobile, obtaining insurance and securing employment.

A cosigner can help you obtain a credit card if you have yet to establish credit. Anyone with good credit can be a co-signer on your credit account. They need to be willing to pay for your balance if you cannot pay for it. This is the perfect way to obtain your first card and start to build positive credit.

TIP! Never use a credit card to buy things you can?t afford. Credit cards should not be used to buy things that you want, but don?t have the money to pay for.

The reason why card companies suggest minimum payments is simply because this amount is how much they want you to pay in order for them to get the largest amount of money from you as possible over a longer period of time. This naturally means that you should pay more than simply the least allowable amount. Don?t incur expensive interest costs over time.

TIP! Check your balance carefully when your statement arrives. It is also important to know your credit limits.

Always have two bank cards on hand if you travel, especially if you are heading overseas. You can provide yourself with better financial options by carrying cards provided by two different banks or companies. If you aren?t able to use one card, having another one that the same bank issued won?t really help much. When you have a couple of cards from different banks, you are able to access your credit easier.

Actual Due

TIP! Be sure your child has the ability to handle the responsibility of credit cards before they get one. The choice may be difficult, but caution now will result in responsible spending later and could help avoid credit disaster.

Look at your monthly statement and check to see if your credit card?s due date is only suggested or if it?s a concrete one. A lot of credit card companies now post suggested due dates along with actual due dates. It is helpful to know whether yours is a suggested or actual due date, especially if you are in a tight spot one month.

TIP! Carry only the number of credit cards that you will use. This makes it easier to keep track of your cards and the charges you make.

As mentioned earlier, it is far too simple to get yourself in trouble with credit cards. Too many charge cards, too many shopping sprees and soon, you will be in big financial trouble. No. 1 Notre Dame has underdog in its DNA

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? The rankings say Notre Dame is No. 1 going into the BCS championship against Alabama. Plenty of folks aren't buying it, starting with the oddsmakers who currently have the Crimson Tide as about a touchdown favorite for the Jan. 7 meeting in Miami between two of college football's proudest programs.

The Fighting Irish aren't sweating the point spread. In fact, it's pretty much business as usual for Notre Dame, which has a chance to become the first team since 1984 to start the season unranked and end it as national champions.

"Everybody thought everybody was better than us," defensive tackle Louis Nix III said Monday. "Oklahoma was better than us. USC was better than us.

"We get it. We know how everyone thinks. We're just Notre Dame. Overrated Notre Dame. No one gives us credit for anything. Just the luck of the Irish, I guess."

History suggests that being the underdog in the BCS title game hasn't been a bad thing. Of the 14 BCS championship games played since the system was implemented in 1998, seven have been won by the underdog.

Alabama was a slight underdog last year after losing to LSU in the regular season, and then shut out the Tigers with the national title on the line.

In the 2005 championship game between Texas and Southern California, Vince Young and the Longhorns felt as if they were being talked about as nothing more than a speed bump on the road to USC's coronation as one of the greatest teams in college football history. Plus, Young was still seething over coming in second to USC's Reggie Bush in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The result: Texas 41, USC 38, and a performance for the ages by Young.

The following season, Ohio State reached the national championship game with a perfect record, No. 1 ranking and a Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Troy Smith. Florida was the Buckeyes opponent and the question was: Did the Gators even belong in game?

Urban Meyer, the Gators' coach, made sure his players got that message. Even if it meant stretching the truth a bit. After a month of being told that nobody thought they had a chance to beat Ohio State, the Gators routed the Buckeyes 41-14 to start the Southeastern Conference's run of six straight BCS championships.

It's impossible to quantify what, if any, effect being the underdog has actually had on any of those "upsets." Any team that gets to a championship game must be good in the first place.

Whether Notre Dame can or will use the slights ? real or perceived ? as motivation remains to be seen.

"I've used the technique before during my time as a head coach," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said about playing the underdog card. "I don't know that that is pertinent because it's a one-game deal. It's all or nothing.

"Both teams have different dynamics to deal with because of the long layoff. Preparation is more important than any kind of fire and brimstone speech that I can bring to them."

Offensive coordinator Chuck Martin said the coaches don't even need to bring it up. The Fighting Irish have played all season like a team with something to prove.

"I think it's a little bit part of our kids' DNA now," he said. "We don't have to use it as much as maybe early in the year when we went on the road to Michigan State and they were ranked eighth and nobody was thinking we were very good. I think we've kind of just built it into who we are. Everybody likes telling us what we're not good at ? which is fine by us. One of our strengths is knowing what we're not very good at. We try to play to our strengths and play away from our weaknesses."

It's a style that has led to more than a few close calls on the way to Miami.

Notre Dame beat Purdue and BYU by three points each. The Irish needed three overtimes to beat Pittsburgh by a field goal and went to overtime against Stanford, too. In both the Pitt and Stanford games, Notre Dame caught a few breaks. A missed field goal here, a questionable call by the officials there.

Meanwhile, except for its upset loss to Texas A&M, Alabama has rarely been challenged on its way to a third BCS title game appearance in the past four seasons.

The Tide is outscoring its opponents by an average of 28 points per game. Notre Dame's average margin of victory is 16 points per game, as the Irish have leaned on Heisman Trophy finalists Manti Te'o and a stellar defense while they developed first-year starting quarterback Everett Golson.

"I understand why people say Alabama's going to win," said Nix, the 325-pound anchor of Notre Dame's defensive front. "Great offensive line. Good quarterback. Great guys on the edge. They've been in the national championship twice in the last three years. I would probably pick Alabama, too.

"At the end of the day it's all about what's on the scoreboard."
