Gas-giant exoplanets cling close to their parent stars

June 27, 2013 ? Gemini Observatory's Planet-Finding Campaign finds that, around many types of stars, distant gas-giant planets are rare and prefer to cling close to their parent stars. The impact on theories of planetary formation could be significant.

Finding extrasolar planets has become so commonplace that it seems astronomers merely have to look up and another world is discovered. However, results from Gemini Observatory's recently completed Planet-Finding Campaign -- the deepest, most extensive direct imaging survey to date -- show the vast outlying orbital space around many types of stars is largely devoid of gas-giant planets, which apparently tend to dwell close to their parent stars.

"It seems that gas-giant exoplanets are like clinging offspring," says Michael Liu of the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy and leader of the Gemini Planet-Finding Campaign. "Most tend to shun orbital zones far from their parents. In our search, we could have found gas giants beyond orbital distances corresponding to Uranus and Neptune in our own Solar System, but we didn't find any." The Campaign was conducted at the Gemini South telescope in Chile, with funding support for the team from the National Science Foundation and NASA. The Campaign's results, Liu says, will help scientists better understand how gas-giant planets form, as the orbital distances of planets are a key signature that astronomers use to test exoplanet formation theories.

Eric Nielsen of the University of Hawaii, who leads a new paper about the Campaign's search for planets around stars more massive than the Sun, adds that the findings have implications beyond the specific stars imaged by the team. "The two largest planets in our Solar System, Jupiter and Saturn, are huddled close to our Sun, within 10 times the distance between the Earth and Sun," he points out. "We found that this lack of gas-giant planets in more distant orbits is typical for nearby stars over a wide range of masses."

Two additional papers from the Campaign will be published soon and reveal similar tendencies around other classes of stars. However, not all gas-giant exoplanets snuggle so close to home. In 2008, astronomers using the Gemini North telescope and W.M. Keck Observatory on Hawaii's Mauna Kea took the first-ever direct images of a family of planets around the star HR 8799, finding gas-giant planets at large orbital separations (about 25-70 times the Earth-Sun distance). This discovery came after examining only a few stars, suggesting such large-separation gas giants could be common. The latest Gemini results, from a much more extensive imaging search, show that gas-giant planets at such distances are in fact uncommon.

Liu sums up the situation this way: "We've known for nearly 20 years that gas-giant planets exist around other stars, at least orbiting close-in. Thanks to leaps in direct imaging methods, we can now learn how far away planets can typically reside. The answer is that they usually avoid significant areas of real estate around their host stars. The early findings, like HR 8799, probably skewed our perceptions."

The team's second new paper explores systems where dust disks around young stars show holes, which astronomers have long suspected are cleared by the gravitational force of orbiting planets. "It makes sense that where you see debris cleared away that a planet would be responsible, but we did not know what types of planets might be causing this. It appears that instead of massive planets, smaller planets that we can't detect directly could be responsible," said Zahed Wahhaj of the European Southern Observatory and lead author on the survey's paper on dusty disk stars. Finally, the third new paper from the team looks at the very youngest stars close to Earth. "A younger system should have brighter, easier to detect planets," according to the lead author Beth Biller of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.

"Around other stars, NASA's Kepler telescope has shown that planets larger than the Earth and within the orbit of Mercury are plentiful," explains Biller. "The NICI Campaign demonstrates that gas-giant planets beyond the distance of the orbit of Neptune are rare." The soon-to-be-delivered Gemini Planet Imager will begin to bridge this gap likely revealing, for the first time, how common giant planets are in orbits similar to the gas-giant planets of our own Solar System.

The observations for the Campaign were obtained with the Gemini instrument known as NICI, the Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Imager, which was the first instrument for an 8-10 meter-class telescope designed specifically for finding faint companions around bright stars. NICI was built by Doug Toomey (Mauna Kea Infrared), Christ Ftaclas, and Mark Chun (University of Hawai'i), with funding from NASA.

The first two papers from the Campaign have been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (Nielsen et al. and Wahhaj et al.), and the third paper (Biller et al.) will be published later this summer.

The NICI Campaign team is composed of PI Michael Liu, co-PI Mark Chun (University of Hawaii), co-PI Laird Close (University of Arizona), Doug Toomey (Mauna Kea Infrared), Christ Ftaclas (University of Hawaii), Zahed Wahhaj (European Southern Observatory), Beth Biller (Max Planck Institute for Astronomy), Eric Nielsen (University of Hawaii), Evgenya Shkolnik (DTM, Carnegie Institution of Washington), Adam Burrows (Princeton University), Neill Reid (Space Telescope Science Institute), Niranjan Thatte, Matthias Tecza, Fraser Clarke (University of Oxford), Jane Gregorio Hetem, Elisabete De Gouveia Dal Pino (University of Sao Paolo), Silvia Alencar (University of Minas Gerais), Pawel Artymowicz (University of Toronto), Doug Lin (University of California Santa Cruz), Shigeru Ida (Tokyo Institute of Technology), Alan Boss (DTM, Carnegie Institution of Washington), and Mark Kuchner (NASA Goddard), Tom Hayward and Markus Hartung (Gemini Observatory), Jared Males, and Andy Skemer (University of Arizona).

Nvidia GeForce GTX 760

Nvidia has spent the last few months busily refreshing its GPU lineup, starting with the top-end Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan last February. Now, it's the Nvidia GeForce GTX 760's turn; this new midrange card drops is being billed as a replacement for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti?despite the name similarity, Nvidia has indicated that the Nvidia GTX 660 will remain in production.

Comparing the 600 and 700 families can get confusing, depending on whether you compare by price point or by card features. At the top of Nvidia's current stack, there's the GTX Titan?a $1,000 card based on the GK110 GPU. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 is a $649 card that also uses the GK110 architecture, but has fewer total cores. It's significantly more powerful than the GTX 680 that it replaced. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 with faster clock speeds and more cores enabled,, with a correspondingly higher price of $400.

The Nvidia GTX 760 continues this trend. It has 1,152 cores, 96 TMUs, and 32 render output units (ROPs), as compared to 960 cores, 80 TMUs, and 24 ROPs on the old GTX 660. Price is also up, to $249 from $199. The card we tested is a 2GB GPU?Nvidia expects this to be the most common configuration, though manufacturers have the option to include 4GB if they see fit. Unlike the higher-end cards, all of which have borrowed the GTX Titan's cooler design, the GTX 760 keeps the plastic-shroud and styling of the 600 family. One difference between the GTX 660 and the new GTX 760 is the power requirements? the newer card requires a pair of six-pin PCIe connectors, where the 660 only needed one.

Since Nvidia is keeping the Nvidia GTX 660 on the market, the new GTX 760 serves as an additional price point rather than an attempt to lift Nvidia's margins by raising the price of its midrange card. The closest AMD competitor to the new GTX 760 that we had on hand is the AMD Radeon HD 7950. While somewhat more expensive, at $299, it also offers more RAM (3GB vs. 2GB) and AMD's potent "Never Settle" bundle of video games to the new GTX 760 is AMD's own HD Radeon 7950, which starts at around $285.

Our performance comparisons were done using an Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge CPU, 16GB of DDR3-1600, a 256GB OCZ Vector SSD, and a 27-inch Asus VG278HE monitor at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution. We're comparing primarily against the AMD Radeon 7950, at $289, and the Nvidia GTX 770, at the heftier $399 price point. The GTX 690 performance was simulated using a pair of GTX 680s in SLI; tests have demonstrated that the performance delta between the two configurations is essentially nil. All of our tests were run at 1,920-by-1,080 with maximum details set. Multisampled antialiasing was activated when available and turned up to 8x if possible. In Metro Last Light, the game's "SSAA" (super-sampled antialiasing) box is checked, rather than a specific level of MSAA.

In Civilization V's "Late Game View" benchmark test, the GTX 760 was slightly behind the newer Nvidia GTX 770, at 87fps vs. 89fps. The AMD Radeon 7950 also hit 89 fps, which puts all three solutions in an effective three-way tie. Shogun 2: Total War, on the other hand, showed some differences?the GTX 760 hit 39fps here, slightly ahead of the more-expensive AMD Radeon 7950 at 37.5fps, but far behind the Nvidia GTX 770, at 50fps.

In Metro 2033 and its sequel, Metro: Last Light, AMD pulled slightly ahead. The GTX 760's score of 29fps in Metro 2033 and 26fps in Metro Last Light was slightly behind the AMD Radeon 7950's 32fps and 27fps, respectively. The GTX 770 hit 33fps in both tests, but you'll want to adjust video details downwards on all these cards if you're aiming for a smooth frame rate. The AMD Radeon 7950 led the Nvidia GTX 660 in BioShock Infinite (63fps to 57fps), and the Nvidia GTX 770 sped past both, at 71fps. In DiRT 3, the AMD Radeon 7950 turned in a score of 92fps while the GTX 760 hit 84fps.

Hitman: Absolution also favored the AMD Radeon 7950?the GTX 760 scored 29fps in the game's built-in benchmark test, compared to 34.5fps for the AMD solution. Again, the Nvidia GTX 770 is well ahead, at 44fps, as we'd expect given the price delta ($249 vs. $399).

According to Nvidia, the GTX 760 is the last new GPU release for the next several months. In this case, the company isn't retiring the old Nvidia GTX 660, which will continue at $199. Overall, the GTX 760 drops neatly into the gap between the $399 GTX 760 and the GTX 660?it's more expensive than the $199 card, but offers more GPU cores, more raster outputs, and higher clock speeds. It's also priced to come in just under AMD's Radeon 7950.

The AMD 7950, however, isn't particularly threatened by this new launch. While the two cards trade shots in several titles, the AMD solution is faster in five of the six games we tested. That's more-or-less as it should be, given that it's also more expensive. Like the Nvidia GTX 770, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 is best characterized as an incremental improvement to a strong product line. The AMDHD 7950 is a strong alternative for slightly more money (and the Never Settled bundle), but if you're an Nvidia fan with a card from the GTX 400 or 500 era, this is a strong option as an upgrade that won't break the bank.

Paris, France (4E) ? French business confidence slightly climbed this month from May, according to a report released on Tuesday by statistical office Insee.

The index for business confidence in the manufacturing sector improved to 93 in June from 92 in the previous month. The result is in line with the economists? estimate in a survey by the Dow Jones Newswire, although the index is still below its long-term average of 100.

A wider gauge of business confidence, which includes construction, wholesale, services and retail, rose to 86 in June from 85 in the previous month, although below the long-term average of 100. Confidence in the construction industry also declined, according to the data.

Respondents in the survey from the business sector think that the industrial economic situation is nearly stable.

Respondents? opinions about the previous activity as well as the general production outlook of business stayed unchanged in May, and were below their long-term averages.

The general production outlook, a view of business leaders? sentiment about the French industry in general, continues to stay very low in June, according to the data.

Confidence in business sectors like retail jumped from the prior month, while construction slightly fell. No changes in sentiment for the service sector from the May level.

French police arrest six suspected radical Islamists

PARIS (Reuters) - French police arrested six people on Monday who are suspected of belonging to a radical Islamist cell and of preparing attacks in France, a police source said.

The suspects, aged 22 to 38, were arrested in and near the Paris region. They were all known to police for various offences and one had appeared in an anti-terrorism investigation.

They can be held for questioning for up to 96 hours before judges decide whether to put them under formal investigation.

France has been on heightened security alert since January, when its military intervened in Mali to help repel al Qaeda-linked Islamist rebels who had seized control of the north of the former French colony.

A Muslim convert suspected of stabbing a French soldier in a religiously motivated attack was placed under formal investigation last month.

Alexandre Dhaussy, 22, is suspected of stabbing the soldier in the neck while he was patrolling a Paris business district, and then fleeing the scene. The soldier survived and is out of hospital.

Two new Baylor University studies show that Israeli Jewish adults who attend synagogue regularly, pray often, and consider themselves religious are significantly healthier and happier than their non-religious counterparts. They also report greater satisfaction with life.

"These findings nicely reinforce the inherited Jewish folk wisdom that going to shul (synagogue) is 'good for you,'" said Baylor University researcher Jeff Levin, Ph.D.

Levin holds a distinguished chair at Baylor University, where he is University Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health and Director of the Program on Religion and Population Health at the Institute for Studies of Religion.

Commitment to Jewish religious belief and practice is strongly associated with greater physical and psychological well-being, Levin said. One study, published in Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, an official journal of the American Psychological Association, used 2010 data on 1,849 Jewish adults from the Israeli sample of the European Social Survey. The other study, published in the Journal of Happiness Studies, used 2009-10 data on 991 Jewish adults from the Israeli sample of the International Social Survey Programme's Religion III survey.

These new results confirm findings from other studies of Jews in Israel and the U.S. conducted over the past few years. Seven such studies have been published by Levin using data from a variety of national and global surveys. They have consistently identified facets of Jewish religious expression as among the most reliable predictors of measures of physical and mental health and overall well-being.

Westwood dedicates show to Bradley Manning

MILAN (AP) ? Vivienne Westwood, the British designer known for her eccentric fashion, dedicated her latest menswear collection to Bradley Manning, an American soldier currently on trial in the U.S. for leaking classified material to the website WikiLeaks. He was arrested in May 2010 in Iraq.

During the show for next summer, presented Sunday, the second day of Milan Fashion Week, models walked down the runway wearing a large badge with a picture of the soldier on it, and the word "TRUTH" written at the bottom in bold white letters on a red background.

At the end of the show, the designer herself came out for a runway bow wearing the same badge.

The collection was casual chic with African references, from the striped linen used for a long Kaftan shirt or a summer suit, to baggy pants and breeches, to geometric prints, to toe sandals and flip flops.

The show opened with a series of summer khaki slacks worn over classic shirts, perfect for a toney summer evening.

Absent were the usual Westwood menswear gimmicks such as skirts or high heels. Instead the designer made her runway appearance wearing colored stockings with "climate" written on one leg and "revolution" on the other, showing that truth is not her only battle.

Week in review: Apple TV update, RSS after Google Reader, Insta-vine and more!

Things have started to settle back into some kind of normality following the intensity of WWDC week, but there has still been plenty going on to keep us all busy. This week we saw an Apple TV update that brought some additional channels to the set-top box, the RSS feed market opens up a little more just a week out from Google Reader's shutdown, and Instagram does Vine, and adds video (with filters) to their massive social photo sharing network. This is the week that was.

Facebook had a press event scheduled for this week -- just an hour before Samsung held their big Premiere 2013 event in London -- and for a while it was shrouded in mystery. The invites went out by regular 'snail mail' and didn't seem to hint at much. Then, right at the start of the week it was rumored that Instagram might be trying to out-do Vine by adding video. Come Thursday, that's just what we got. 15 second video clips, filters, and Instagram's massive network to share it on. Thankfully, the updated app also comes with a way to shut off auto-play.

Apple TV received a software update this week that added a selection of new channels, including ESPN and HBO:GO. Qello, Crunchyroll and Sky News rounded out the new channels, but what was received still comes as a disappointment to some. You have to be a HBO or ESPN subscriber to use their channels, Qello is also a subscription service, and in the UK at least, Sky News is a free-to-view television channel. But, any love for the Apple TV is better than no love at all.

Our own Peter Cohen also weighed in with some good thoughts on the state of the Apple TV following this latest update.

We're little over a week out from Google's scheduled shutdown of their Reader RSS service, and the race to to replace continues. This week saw the early favorite Feedly take the next step towards becoming an all out replacement service by launching Feedly Cloud, with Newsify becoming the first third-party app on iOS to use their API. AOL also quietly emerged as the latest contender in the space, with the news emerging that they will begin accepting invites for their own Reader service from Monday June 24.

We had a couple of big name game releases for iOS and Mac this week. First up XCOM: Energy Unknown saw it's iPad debut promising a full console port designed for the mobile environment. It isn't cheap, but it's definitely a premium title that we're excited to have on iOS.

Also this week Rockstar Games announced that Max Payne 3 would finally be coming to the Mac. Not a particularly new title, it's a case of better late than never for Max Payne 3 but is still a welcome addition to the Mac gaming stable.

Now we're clear of WWDC, the iMore team has begun dissecting all that we saw unveiled, starting with iOS 7. If you missed them the first time around, be sure to drop by and give the posts below a read.

And of course, this week was Apps week on Talk Mobile 2013. Some really great discussions came about from all the great readers across Mobile Nations, but if you missed any of it hit the Talk Mobile link at the top of any of the sites to recap on all the weeks great content.

That's it for another seven days. This was just a taster of the last weeks news, but be sure to drop into the comments and let us know what stood out for you!

HP announces Slate 21 desktop-style Android all-in-one

HP Slate 21

HP is adding another device to its expanding Android lineup today by announcing the Slate 21, a large "all-in-one" tablet-desktop hybrid device. As the name would suggest, this device has a 21.5-inch display putting it squarely in the market of HP's current line of all-in-one Windows desktop devices. The Slate 21 is running just Android 4.2 though -- there's no operating system switching or virtualization going on here. HP is pitching this as a media consumption device for current Android users that have built up a library of Android apps to have around the house, taking place of having additional tablets or mobile devices.

The Slate 21 stands on an adjustable kickstand in the back, which can pivot the screen to any angle between 15 and 70 degrees, giving a wide range of viewing options. As for specs, we're looking at a 21.5-inch full-HD IPS display, a Tegra 4 processor, Bluetooth 3.0, a front-facing camera and 8GB of internal storage (expandable by SDcard). The absolute specifics of every internal isn't yet known, but we'll surely have a better idea once we get closer to the September launch window where the Slate 21 will be available for $399.

Glenn Greenwald Spars with David Gregory

Glenn Greenwald and David Gregory got into a bit of a row on NBC's Meet the Press after Gregory asked whether Greenwald should maybe be prosecuted for?"aiding and abetting"?National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. Surprisingly, Greenwald did not appreciate being called a criminal by a fellow journalist! "I think it?s pretty extraordinary that anybody who would call themselves a journalist would publicly muse about whether or not other journalists should be charged with felonies," he said. Greenwald said "the assumption" he did anything to help Snowden, besides act as the vessel for his classified leaks, "completely without evidence." Greenwald cited the Justice Department investigations of the Associated Press and Fox News as evidence the administration is trying to "criminalize investigative journalism" and accusing reporters of "being co-conspirator in felonies for working with sources." But Greenwald wasn't done there: "If you want to embrace that theory it means that every investigative journalist in the United States who works with their sources, who receives classified information, is a criminal." Gregory responded to Greenwald's dressing down by questioning whether or not he counts as a journalist. "The question of who's a journalist may be up to a debate with regard to what you're doing," he said, before adding that he was just "asking a question that has been raised by lawmakers," and "not embracing anything." Fun times!?

Aiding and abetting were the words of the day, apparently, as Sen. Chuck Schumer fired a similar accusation towards Russian president Vladimir Putin during his appearance on CNN's State of the Union. It seems Schumer doesn't think Putin's been a great friend recently. "The bottom line is very simple: allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways and Putin always seems almost eager to put a finger in the eye of the United States, whether it is Syria, Iran and now of course with Snowden," Schumer said. "That's not how allies should treat each other and I think it will have serious consequences for the United States-Russia relationship." Schumer said Putin had to be aware of Snowden's movement plans and accused him of aiding and abetting the fugitive.?"The fact that [Russian officials] allowed him to land, indicates that we are not in a place of cooperation," Schumer said.?

RELATED: Lindsey Graham and Hagel Make Nice (For Now)

Sen. Lindsay Graham said he hopes the U.S. chases Edward Snowden to "the ends of the earth" during his appearance on Fox News Sunday. "I believe he hurt our nation," Graham said. ?"He compromised our national security program. The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela, so I hope we?ll chase him to the ends of the Earth, bring him to justice and let the Russians know there?ll be consequences if they harbor this guy." Snowden was the topic of the morning, but Graham was originally booked to talk about the bipartisan immigration deal currently facing the Senate. "I think we?re on the verge of getting 70 votes ... We?re very, very close to getting 70 votes," Graham said hopefully. The South Carolina Senator said the border was sufficient and the terms of the bill are something both sides can agree on. But, more importantly, if this bill fails it could be fatal for the Republican party. "If it fails and we are blamed for its failure, we're in trouble as a party," he said. "We need to grow this party."

RELATED: NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre Still Thinks Guns Aren't the Problem

Sen. Rand Paul cautioned Edward Snowden against getting close with China and Russia. "I do think for Mr. Snowden, if he cozies up to the Russian government, it will be nothing but bad for his name in history,"?Paul told Candy Crowley on CNN's State of the Union. "If he goes to an independent third country like Iceland and if he refuses to talk to any sort of formal government about this, I think there's a chance he'll be seen as an advocate of privacy. If he cozies up to either the Russian government, Chinese government or any of these governments perceived still as enemies of ours, I think that will be a real problem for him in history." Paul, who has defended Snowden in the past, was reacting to the news Snowden had flew to Russia Sunday morning. He also mentioned during his appearance that he will not be supporting the bipartisan immigration reform bill. "I'm all in favor of immigration reform but I'm like most conservatives in the country, that I think reform should be dependent on border security first," he said. "So I introduced an amendment that would have done just that, border security first and then immigration reform with congressional checks on whether that?s occurring. That wasn?t voted on favorably and so, without some congressional authority, without border security first, I can't support the final bill." Paul also seems to think the House won't support the immigration bill despite strong urges from their Republican counterparts in the Senate. "The House is much closer to me, and I think they think border security has to come first, before you get immigration reform," he said.

Gen. Keith Alexander said he didn't believe Snowden is acting "with noble intent" during his interview on ABC's This Week. Alexander was asked whether he understood why alarms didn't sound whenever Snowden left the country for Hong Kong. "No, I don't," Alexander said. "It's clearly an individual who's betrayed the trust and confidence we had in him.?This is an individual who is not acting, in my opinion, with noble intent." Alexander said they're going to keep an eye on people who performed the same duties Snowden had when he still worked as an NSA contractor. "We are now putting in place actions that would give us the ability to track our system administrators, what they're doing, what they're taking, a two-man rule," he said. "We've changed the passwords.? But at the end of the day, we have to trust that our people are going to do the right thing.? This is an extremely important mission defending our country."

Egypt court: Brotherhood members planned jailbreak

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court on Sunday said Muslim Brotherhood members conspired with Hamas, Hezbollah and local militants to storm a prison in 2011 and free 34 Brotherhood leaders, including the future President Mohammed Morsi.

The court statement read by judge Khaled Mahgoub named two members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood ? Ibrahim Haggag and Sayed Ayad ? to be among the alleged conspirators in the attack on Wadi el-Natroun prison on Jan. 29, 2011.

It is the first statement by a court that holds members of the three Islamist groups ? the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, the Palestinian Hamas, and Lebanon's Hezbollah ? responsible for a series of jailbreaks during the chaos of Egypt's 2011 uprising. Two other prisons in which Hamas and Hezbollah members were held were also attacked.

Morsi and other Brotherhood leaders have maintained that they were freed by local residents. Hamas, the Palestinian chapter of the Brotherhood, has denied involvement in the attacks on prisons.

The court statement is likely to further fuel opposition to Morsi's rule just a week before his opponents are scheduled to stage massive protests to force him out of office. The planned June 30 demonstrations mark his first anniversary in office as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

The past year has seen growing polarization as Egypt struggles with a host of problems that many accuse Morsi of failing to effectively tackle. They include surging crime, rising prices, power cuts, fuel shortages and unemployment.

Morsi has not spoken publicly about his escape from Wadi el-Natroun since he gave an account of what happened in a frantic phone call he made to Al-Jazeera Mubasher TV moments after being freed.

"From the noises we heard ... It seemed to us there were (prisoners) attempting to get out of their cells and break out into the prison yard and the prison authorities were trying to regain control and fired tear gas," Morsi said in the call.

By the time they got out, the prison was empty, and there was no sign of a major battle, he said.

The prison breaks took place during the 18-day popular uprising that toppled the 29-year regime of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. The breaks led to a flood of some 23,000 criminals onto the streets, fueling a crime wave that continues to this day. Among those who escaped were around 40 members of Hamas and Hezbollah as well as the 34 Brotherhood leaders.

A total of 26 top police, prison and intelligence officials have testified before the court, which held its hearings in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia. Some gave their testimony in closed session.

The case began in January when a former inmate appealed a three-month sentence passed by a lower court that convicted him of escaping Wadi el-Natroun. The defendant was acquitted by judge Mahgoub, who on Sunday referred to prosecutors the testimonies and evidence gathered during the trial on the jailbreak at Wadi el-Natroun in order "to reveal the truth and honor the state's right to mete out justice."

There was no immediate word from the office of the country's top prosecutor on whether his office planned to take up the case.

In Egypt's polarized political climate, Morsi's opponents have been using his escape from Wadi el-Natroun against him, saying friends of the Brotherhood violated the country's security and fed its instability. The eagerness of some in the intelligence and security agencies to blame Hamas could in part reflect resentment of the Brotherhood's ties with the militant group, which they have long seen as a threat.

The Wadi el-Natroun prison in which Morsi and his Brotherhood comrades were held is part of a four-jail complex northwest of Cairo. A total of 11,171 inmates were released from the complex. Thirteen inmates were also killed, according to Mahgoub, who said the attackers used machine-guns mounted on pickup trucks and SUVs as well as huge earth-moving vehicles that demolished parts of the walls and gates.

The last two hearings of the trial witnessed scuffles between supporters and opponents of Morsi. Sunday's hearing was held amid tight security with stringent control over who gets to enter the tiny courtroom.

Snowden has ticket to Cuba, may go to Venezuela: Russian reports

The already-bizarre saga of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng is approaching the plot of pulpy spy novel. Chen, who faces imminent departure from NYU after completing a year-long fellowship, was allegedly spied on using an iPad that was given to him as a gift upon arriving at the Manhattan university. NYU Law School professor Jerome Cohen told Reuters on Friday morning that the wife of Chinese activist Bob Fu provided Chen with an iPad and iPhone, on which NYU staff later discovered "software?that made it possible to track the dissident's movements and communications. ...
